Fuel & Energy Report

The Fuel & Energy report displays information about the fuel efficiency and usage of drivers or vehicles in the fleet.

To refine the scope of the results, use the date selector or filter by tags. Reports are displayed based on your fleet vehicle composition:

• All vehicles: For fleets with more than one vehicle type, such as electric, plug-in hybrid or fuel vehicles, you can use this column to compare the relative vehicle efficiencies.

• Electric (EV): Battery-powered Electric Vehicle.

  This includes vehicles that are fully electric and rechargeable.

• Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV): Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle.

  This includes vehicles with a rechargeable battery.

• Fuel: Internal Combustion Engine vehicle.

  This is your standard gasoline, diesel, or non-chargeable hybrid vehicle.

The report includes the following information for each vehicle or driver, depending on the types of vehicles in your fleet:

Field	Description
Vehicle or Driver	Name of the vehicle or driver.
Efficiency	A driver’s or vehicle's miles per gallon (or electric equivalent) usage over a specific time frame.
Fuel Used	For fuel or hybrid vehicles, fuel used over a specific time frame.
Energy Used	Energy used over a specific time frame for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
Distance	Distance traveled, using Samsara standardized distance measure. When fuel consumption data reported by the engine control unit (ECU) is not available or is unreliable, Samsara filters these missing or under-reported data points to improve fuel efficiency accuracy. This can lead to a slightly lower distance reported compared to other reports.
% Driving Electric	(Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles) The amount of time vehicle used electric power as compared to total drive time.
Est. Carbon Emissions	Estimated carbon emission based on the standard carbon emissions per gallon/liter of gasoline. Currently this is 8,887 grams of CO2/gallon or 2,348 grams of CO2/liter.
Est. Cost	Estimated fuel cost is calculated using a national average of the cost of fuel from a number of different sources depending on where you are located. In the U.S., Samsara uses data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This number is updated weekly or you can create a custom Fuel Cost.
Total Engine Run Time	The amount of time for which the engine is on.
Idle Time (%)	Amount of time that the engine is on but the vehicle is not moving and PTO is not engaged. When a vehicle switches to idle and the idle time exceeds two minutes, idle time is reported. Idle time less than two minutes is not reported.
PTO Time	The amount of time that the engine is on and power take-off (PTO) auxiliary input is engaged. Note If you do not use any auxiliary inputs, the report hides this column.

Calculations for Carbon Emissions for Different Emissions Factors

Government regulations, consumers, and other stakeholders may ask for reports on carbon emissions from your fleets. The Fuel & Energy Report provides estimated carbon emissions based on a fixed emissions factor of 8,887 grams of CO2/gallon, or 2,348 grams of CO2/liter, of gasoline. If you require a different emissions factor for your emissions reporting, for example emissions factors on other fuel types such as diesel, petrol, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), apply the following standard formula to calculate your CO2 emission per vehicle or your entire fleet:

Fuel usage (in liters/gallons) * [your emissions factor in kg per liter] = CO2 emissions (in kg)

For example, you have a vehicle that used 500 liters of diesel. Your emissions factor for diesel is 2,479 grams of CO2/liter, based on the regulations of your government or organization. 2,479 grams of CO2/liter into kilograms is 2.479 kg, which is your emissions factor in kg per liter. Therefore, your CO2 emissions calculation is: 500 liters * 2.479 kg/liter = 1,239.5 kg.
